I was asked by several clients if I would repeat my tips for your New Year’s Resolution goals, so here it is.
There is a right way and a wrong way to make a New Year's resolution. Be specific about what you want. "I want to get better organized" doesn't cut it. What would make you be better organized? How do I start? What is the final achievement I am looking for?
Break your goals down into steps. You want to be able to measure whether you have accomplished each step. Do not be too tough on yourself. We all have faults and sometimes you have to take two steps back to move forward. Look ahead at the results you want to accomplish and push yourself to achieve your goals.
I hope the tips below help you get where you want to go for the New Year. I am always here to help you achieve those goals if you need that extra support and encouragement.
Create your plan immediately. Do not make your resolution on New Year’s Eve. If you wait that long you will feel rushed and not be able to put a good plan in place and take the steps ahead of time that will help you attain your goals. You should plan your resolution well before December 31.
Make a pro and con list. It may help to see a list of items on paper to motivate you and keep you strong. Don’t rush the list, make it over time and if you want, ask others to contribute to it. Don’t keep your resolution a secret. The more people you tell the more likely you will get the support and encouragement you need. Let’s say you have a room in your home that you never want to enter or if you do, it automatically sets in motion stress and uncertainty on how or where you start to get this room to what your vision is. Write down on your list how you see this room in the future, plan your strategy, and get the help you need if this project seems too overwhelming and plan a date or goal when you want this project done. It always feels wonderful crossing off an item on a do list and seeing the results.
Keep track of your progress and success by putting on your list how far you have come on your resolution goals and how much closer you are to reaching your goal. Do not beat yourself up if you are not achieving your goals on the timeline you have set. Do the best you can each day, and take each day one at a time. Small accomplishments will help keep you motivated. Keeping a list or diary of each goal met motivates you to continue moving forward.
You can make a resolution any time of the year. New Year’s Day is just the 1st day of a month and there are 11 others just like it. Don’t ever feel like you never have time or just cannot make your deadlines. Starting over is just the beginning.
Please give me a call if you have goals that you would like to achieve today so you can move forward with tomorrow. I would love to help you.
